28 guns confiscated in month-long operation
A small arsenal of weapons has been taken off the streets of Broward County by sheriff's deputies after a month-long operation targeting illegal weapons.
Operation Bullseye targeted convicted criminals who are not allowed to have guns.
BSO's Gun Squad followed leads and tips to track down the armed convicts. They confiscated 28 guns, including long-range rifles with scopes, semiautomatic handguns and pistol-grip shotguns. All of the weapons were on display at BSO Headquarters on Monday afternoon.
Police said 19 of those weapon were taken away from convicted felons, and seven others were stolen.
The Gun Squad sergeant said this is the first step toward reducing the number of gun crimes in Broward County.
"These are dangerous people that are out there, and now they're dangerous individuals with access to firearms. It's important to separate them from firearms and prevent them from committing more crimes, even with a gun," said Sgt. Ted Tanaru.
Since the Gun Squad was created in 2009, deputies have confiscated 228 firearms and made 191 arrests.
